Before you book
- Check your passport is valid for at least six months after you return — many countries require it.
- Check visa and entry rules for every country on your trip, including transit stops.
- Take out travel insurance as soon as you book, so you're covered if plans change.
Before you go
- Subscribe to travel advice for your destination at smartraveller.gov.au.
- Some countries need an electronic travel authority before you fly, such as the USA (ESTA), Canada (eTA) and the UK (ETA).
- See your GP about vaccinations and medications 6–8 weeks before you leave.
- Let your bank know you're travelling and carry a backup card.
Documents
- Keep digital copies of your passport, insurance and bookings, and share them with someone at home.
- Carry medication in its original packaging with a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor.
- Have your accommodation address handy for arrival cards and transfers.
Packing smart
- Check your airline's baggage allowance before you pack.
- Liquids in carry-on usually need to be in small containers in a clear bag — check your airport's rules.
- Pack a travel adaptor, a power bank and a change of clothes in your carry-on.
At the airport
- Check in online where you can, and allow plenty of time for international flights.
- Keep your passport, boarding pass and phone in one easy-to-reach place.
- Label your bags inside and out.
While you're away
- Save the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre number: +61 2 6261 3305.
- Use an eSIM or local SIM so you can stay contactable.
- Keep valuables in the hotel safe and only carry what you need.
- Save Jade's number — 0416 934 342 — for help with changes on the road.
Travelling as a group or team
- Share one itinerary with everyone, including emergency contacts.
- Agree on a meeting point at airports and venues.
